1.How to differentiate the overglaze and underglaze

One of the easiest ways to distinguish overglaze and underglaze colored ceramics is to observe the surface smoothness of the colored area.The colorant of underglaze color is covered by the glaze, and its surface is crystal clear, warm, smooth and soft, without any bumps or roughness; while the ceramics with overglaze color will feel more bumpy to the touch, and if used improperly and worn out, the colorant may be exposed.

2.Process

Overglaze and underglaze are different techniques for adding color to ceramics. Underglaze color technology began in the Eastern Han Dynasty, while overglaze color began in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and has a long history. The difference between the two lies mainly in the coloring sequence and firing temperature: underglaze color is to paint on the clay body after the blank is made, and then apply transparent glaze or light glaze, and fire at a high temperature of 1200-1400 degrees Celsius; overglaze color is to paint on the fired white glaze or colored porcelain, and then go through a second firing at 600-900 degrees Celsius.

Compared with underglaze color, the advantage of overglaze color is that the color reproduction is stronger, it is easier to master, and the colors presented are richer. However, due to the relatively low firing temperature, if the object is used improperly, the outer glaze surface will be worn or corroded, and the heavy metal substances in the colorant may dissolve, causing certain harm.But the underglaze color becomes solid and stable after high-temperature firing.The glaze surface forms an invulnerable protective layer that wraps around the colorant, and the substances in the colorant are basically impossible to seep out.
