The craft secret of colorful ceramic decal

The processing method of design and color for pottery and porcelain tableware has been divided into three kinds as on-glaze color, under-glaze color, in-glaze color according to the position of glazed part. Ceramic tableware is mainly produced in Jiangxi province.  Ceramic production process: mud mixing – color matching – embryo drawing – embryo modification – shade drying – glaze – firing molding.

In the ancient kiln scenic spot, there are ancient porcelain workshops and ancient town kilns. Painting on plain body, such as blue and white, in-glaze red, etc. That is called under-glaze color, which is characterized by decorated color on high temperature glaze.

Under-glaze color is a kind of porcelain glaze decoration, also known as “kiln color”.  Under-glaze color is a main decorative means of pottery and porcelain. It is used to draw various decorative patterns on the formed dry plain (semi-finished product) with color materials, and then cover it with white transparent glaze or other light colored surface glaze, and fire it in one time.  

After firing, the pattern is covered by a layer of transparent glaze film. The surface is bright and soft, smooth and not protruding, which is crystal clear and bright. The emergence of under-glaze porcelain can be traced back to The Three Kingdoms Period at the end of Han Dynasty, but it was simply decorated with He-colored pigments.  
 
Under-glaze color is fired once into kiln at high temperature (1200-1400℃).  After burning the pattern is covered by a layer of transparent glaze film below, the surface bright soft, smooth and not convex, crystal clear and bright.  It is characterized by color preservation and durability.  We usually see blue and white porcelain, in-glaze red porcelain, blue and white glaze red, under-glaze three-color porcelain, under-glaze multicolored porcelain and so on is the fine classification of under-glaze color porcelain.   

Under-glaze color is a kind of color material directly applied on the porcelain body, and then covered with a layer of transparent glaze. After entering the kiln, it is fired with porcelain in a high temperature atmosphere.  Its outstanding advantages are not easy to wear, never fade, lead-free, non-toxic, smooth, simple to operate.  Jingde Town blue and white porcelain of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties is the most successful production of under-glaze color, and is also one of the representative varieties of Chinese porcelain.  Under-glaze color includes blue and white, under-glaze red, under-glaze three-color, under-glaze multi-color, under-glaze brown color, brown green color, etc.
